I’m Onome Ako—a storyteller, leader, and advocate for equity and social justice. As the CEO of Action Against Hunger Canada, I lead efforts to combat hunger in over 50 countries, working alongside communities to create solutions that have lasting impact. For me, this work is deeply personal—it’s about creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
As an author and leader, I’ve always believed in the power of stories to inspire and connect. My chapter in Embracing Ambition: Empowering Women to Step Out, Be Seen and Lead reflects my journey as a Black female leader. Writing this chapter was a chance to share the lessons I’ve learned about authenticity, courage, and purpose. I also capture the triumphs and challenges of leadership through poetry, finding creative ways to express the heart of my journey.
My debut picture book, I Am Cherished / Mon nom est Kikelomo, published by Scholastic Canada is a celebration of identity and belonging. Inspired by my Nigerian roots and Canada’s multicultural landscape, the book amplifies voices and stories that often go unheard. Seeing the impact of this story, especially when children recognize themselves in its pages or when adults find healing in its pages has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey as a writer.
Born and raised in Nigeria, I have lived in several countries and now call Canada home but consider myself a global citizen. Whether I’m writing on the GO train, leading global initiatives, or sharing stories with my 9-year-old daughter, my goal is always the same: to leave the world better than I found it.
